The Schema – "Those Rules"

Here’s a new music video from an unsigned band, called The Schema. If you like it, you can find more information on the band at www.theschema.co.uk.

The video is done by Alex de Campi, an unrepresented director, outside the production company system. It cost £500 and took 10 days to make from first meeting to delivered, finished product.

I like the video. Hopefully, they will go far.

BioShock is Out!

BioShock is the "genetically enhanced" first person shooter that lets you do things never before possible in the genre: turn everything into a weapon, biologically mod your body with plasmids, hack devices and systems, upgrade your weapons and craft new ammo variants, and experiment with different battle techniques in an incredible and unique underwater city.

You are a cast-away in Rapture, an underwater Utopia torn apart by civil war. Caught between powerful forces, and hunted down by genetically modified “splicers” and deadly security systems, you have to come to grips with a deadly, mysterious world filled with powerful technology and fascinating characters. No encounter ever plays out the same, and no two gamers will play the game the same way.

BioShock is loaded with some of greatest, most modifiable weapons to ever blast their way into a shooter. But guns alone won’t be enough to defeat the devious AIs of Rapture. There are literally hundreds of other strategies players can use to take out his enemies. Here’s just a few things you can do a foe:

· Catch his Grenades in Mid Air and Toss Them Back at Him
· Freeze Him Solid and Shatter Him with Smack of your Wrench
· Lead him and his comrades to water and Zap them all with 1000 Volts
· Burn Him Up With Home-Made Molotov Cocktails
· Booby Trap Healing Machines and Watch Them Blow up IN his Face
· Brainwash Him to Become Your Personal BodyGuard
· Invent your own Ammo Types to Prey on his Vulnerabilities
· Turn his own Security System Against Him
· Light Him on Fire and Launch Heat Seeking Missiles At him
· Torment Him with Plagues of Insects
· Take Research Photos of Him to Learn his Weaknesses
· Send Him Flying into the Ceiling to Knock him Senseless

No encounter ever plays out the same way twice. No two gamers will ever play BioShock the same way.

The game is for the PC and the Xbox 360.

“Hi, Chaosgone! What are you reading?”

“I’m reading the rules for Adfriendly, about what are considered invalid clicks.”

“Good idea. So you don’t get banned again? You should have read that for Adfun, too.”

“Yeah, but they are so wordy.”

Adfun Rules

You agree to not have invalid clicks on the ads.

Examples of Invalid Clicks

1. Self.
2. Friends.
3. Neighbors.
4. Family members.
5. Anyone else you know.
6. Anyone who reads your blog.
7. The people in that Rupert Holmes song. *

* The People You Never Get to Love

Examples of Valid Clicks

• Click here and we will email the name of the person who is allowed to click on the ads, once we figure out who that is.

     “That doesn’t sound too bad.”

“Wait a minute. If the send you the name of the person who is allowed to click on your ads, then you will know the person.”

     “Yeah? So?”

“Well, then based on #5, they could not click on the ads, either.”

“What?! Then what’s the point of having ads on my blog?”

“That’s what I keep trying to tell you.”

Where Did They Go?

Do you ever wonder what happened to the people that are sung about in songs? What happened to them after the song ended? I ponder these questions at times. Here are a few examples, and what I think happened to them.

The Partridge Family – “Point Me In The Direction Of Albuquerque”

Did the “rag doll” ever get home? Well, my guess is that she did, but did not turn out well, as is seen in the next song.

Aerosmith – “Rag Doll”

Nick Gild – “Hot Child in the City”

Did this “hot child” make it home? Well, over to Sammy Hagar’s place.

Sammy Hagar - “Baby's On Fire”

The Doors - “Gloria”

Where did Gloria go? Well, she was still around in the eighties.

Laura Branigan – “Gloria”

There, the mystery is solved!

Van Halen is Back with David Lee Roth

David St. Hubbins: “You are witnesses at the new birth of Spinal Tap Mark II, hope you enjoy our new direction...” This Is Spinal Tap

Well, not exactly mark 2 for Van Halen, more like mark 4.

First, there was Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, Michael Anthony, and David Lee Roth.

Then, DLR quit the group, and Sammy Hagar joined as lead singer.

Then, Sammy Hagar left the group, and Gary Cherone became lead singer. Only singing on one album, Gary Cherone was the George Lazenby of the Van Halen lead singers.

So, this would be the forth lineup, with Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, and David Lee Roth. Eddie’s son Wolfgang replaces Michael Anthony in this lineup.

I’m happy to see that the group is touring again. While I like Sammy Hagar just fine, I prefer David Lee Roth as the lead singer.

Why Was Michael Anthony Removed from Album Art on Their Web Site?

According to Rolling Stone,

Over the past twenty-four hours, Van Halen fans have been mulling over the latest development in the band’s reunion saga: A poster on a music-industry message board pointed out that in the wake of the band’s tour announcement, the Van Halens seemed to have airbrushed original bassist Michael Anthony out of older album covers on their official Web site and replaced him with their newest member: Eddie Van Halen’s son, Wolfgang. The swap was evident on the lower right of the cover of the band’s self-titled debut (which came out thirteen years before Wolfgang was born), and the group shot for Women and Children First had been removed entirely.

A visit to the tour section of Van Halen’s site today reveals that the album covers in question have been replaced with the original artwork. However, another message board commenter pointed out there were no images of David Lee Roth in 2004’s career-spanning The Best of Both Worlds, as the frontman and Eddie Van Halen were on the outs during that time. (The pair made a point of embracing at Monday’s reunion tour press conference to demonstrate all is well). As of now, the band hasn’t issued any statements regarding the artwork incident.

-- Erica Futterman

Controversy? Maybe. Did Van Halen try to rewrite history, like George Lucas changed how Anakin Skywalker looked in Return of the Jedi? (From middle aged man, to a young man.) http://en.wikipedia.org

How about this idea instead? Maybe the webmasters were trying to think what to do with Van Halen’s website, while they were waiting to release the "real" site next month. What to put on the site, when the band did not even have any pictures of the new band lineup yet? So, someone had the great idea of changing the artwork to show the new lineup. Bad idea! I’m glad they changed it back. Now, if only we can get George Lucas to change Anakin Skywalker in Return of the Jedi back...

Why Is Michael Anthony Not With the Band Now?

They aren’t talking about it much. However, Michael will be touring with Sammy Hagar this fall, so he is keeping busy. http://www.madanthonycafe.com

David Lee Roth Makes a Great Front Man

If you want someone to talk it up about your band, DLR is your man. He is good at giving everyone in the band credit.

And He Talks Up the New Van Halen in 2007

Cover Bands

Here's a good article on cover bands. Also known as tribute bands, they play the music of a famous rock group.

Tribute bands and the quest to be as good as the real thing

By Erica Febré efebre@hippopress.com

For the members of most tribute bands, the desire to be Van Halen, The Ramones or U2 started with a live performance.

Several band members remember being wowed by their idols and then saddened when those bands either stopped performing live or stopped performing in the area.

“When we started it, Van Halen wasn’t doing anything and there weren’t a lot of Van Halen tributes playing any Sammy Hagar material,” said Zander Carlson with Balance, a Van Halen tribute band. “I also wanted to build an Eddie Van Halen guitar and figured if I built the guitar then we had to play it too.”

“We didn’t start this to be the next Ramones. It was almost out of respect, like this is something that we should do to keep it alive for the people that love it just as much as we do,” said Bobby Ramoniac with The Ramoniacs, a Ramones tribute.

“Some of us here still remember The Ramones. It’s a place for the Ramones fans to get back together. But we’re also doing it for the people that missed what we were fortunate enough to see,” Bobby said.

Getting Old

Something I thought up today. I am somewhere between 2 and 3, myself.

When you walk past a group of people, and they are laughing...

1. When you are young, you assume that they are laughing about you, and you feel bad.

2. When you get older, you figure that they are laughing about something else, not you, so you don’t feel bad.

3. When you are very old, you know that they are laughing about you, and you don’t care!

Credit Card Skins

Visa
Originally uploaded by webgard
Are you bored with the way your credit card looks? Pretty plain, isn’t it? Well, dress it up with a credit card skin, a thin sticker to apply to your credit card. If you are creative, you can design one yourself.

You will need:

· 3M spray mount. ($3.00 at Michaels. Use spray mount, not poster mount.)
· Credit card. (Free and plentiful.)
· Knitting needles. (You can also use something pointy yet soft.)
· X-Acto knife. ($10.00)
· Premium T-shirt transfer paper. ($10 at Michaels. Don't waste your time with the junk they sell at Staples -- go for the high-end stuff.)
· Iron.
· Adobe Photocrap or similar image-editing software.
· Color inkjet printer. (Laser printers will melt the paper.)

You can find the complete instructions at: http://www.instructables.com

If you don’t want to create one yourself, you can buy a credit card skin at http://creditcovers.com, but the designs are limited.

If you don’t want to design a skin, or buy one, a credit card is about the same size as an artist's trading card. Try looking through the Flickr ATC group to see if you can find a design you like.

Omni-Directional Treadmill

Virtual Space Devices, Inc. has developed an omni-directional treadmill (ODT).

Virtual Space Devices, Inc. has developed omni-directional treadmill (ODT) technology over the last 10 years, working primarily with the US Army. Combining the infinite plane of the ODT with an immersive virtual reality system permits an immersant to walk or run freely through the digital landscape. Navigation is transparent and natural. Immersion is total.

The ODT surface is flat and continuous. It is not a bowl or made of discrete plates. The infinite surface is motion-slaved to the user’s motion with tight control and no inertial residue. Belts that comprise the surface are substantially similar to those used in conventional treadmills.

This would be cool for virtual reality games. And a good way to get exercise!

Star Trek: What's Next?

Yesterday we talked about Star Wars. Today let’s talk about Star Trek. It started in the 60s with the TV show Star Trek, which was on for three seasons, and then it was cancelled.

In the 70’s there was Star Trek: The Animated Series for one season. It stared the original actors from the original series.

After that, the movies did not start until 1979. From 1979 to 1991, there were six movies made with the original actors from the original series.

Then, starting in the 80’s came the new TV shows. Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987–1994), Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993–1999), Star Trek: Voyager (1995–2001), and Star Trek: Enterprise (2001–2005).

From 1994 to 2002, there were four more movies, with the cast from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

So, what is up for Star Trek now?

In December 2008, there will be a new Star Trek movie. The film will feature James T. Kirk and Spock, but who will play them? http://en.wikipedia.org

Also, there is a new TV show for Star Trek on the web. Star Trek: New Voyages. It takes off where Star Trek from the 60s ended. After all, it was a five year mission. There are two years to go. It uses different actors instead of the original actors. http://www.StarTrekNewVoyages.com

I’m glad that they are still making Star Trek movies and TV shows. Star Wars people, how about you?

Star Wars Needs to Expand Its Universe

As I posted the other day, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will be released in 2008, and include a video game, a book, and more. How about another movie?

When the first movie was released, it was just called Star Wars. Later on, based on it’s popularity, George Lucas announced that there would be a total of nine movies.

The “second trilogy,” to be made first. Star Wars was renamed Episode 4 - A New Hope. And Episode 5 - The Empire Strikes Back, and Episode 6 – The Return of the Jedi were released later.

The first trilogy came later, and included Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace, Episode 2 – Attack of the Clones, and Episode 3 – Revenge of the Sith. This series was supposed to take place twenty years before the second trilogy.

The third, final trilogy, was supposed to take place twenty years after the second trilogy, but it has never been made. Instead, George Lucas made changes to the original trilogy a couple of times.

Now would be a good time for some more movies. While not twenty years in the future, I would like to see them make movies out of The Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn. (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command.)

The Timothy Zahn books were a good read, and would make great movies. They may have a problem getting the original actors to be in the movie, since they are all older now, but they could use other actors, if they had to. It would still be fun to see more movies. I can hope, can't I?

Russian Music Videos

I found most of these on englishrussia.com. I do not speak Russian; but I find these songs fun to listen to, even if I do not know the words.

“Byl Odyn Paren” by The Singing Guitars

Beat music from the sixties.

Here’s an attempt at a translation, using the google translation, and a little editing.

There was a boy who like me he loved The Beatles and The Rolling Stones
He always toured the world to sing the pretty things of America
He was not beautiful but exactly thus he had a thousand girls
If he sang “Help” and “Ticket to Ride” or “Lady Jane” or “Yesterday”
He sang alive to the freedom, but a letter without waiting
Of his guitar it separated it, he is called in America.
Stop! With Rolling Stones, stop! with Beatles songs.
Errand was to Vietnam, to fight the Vietcongs.

Ta tá ra ta tá…

He was a boy who like me loved the Beatles and the Rolling Stones
He toured the world but it finished, making the war in Vietnam
Long hair do not use more, it does not touch its guitar and yes
An instrument that always gives to the same note ra-tá-tá-tá
It does not have friends, it does not see girls, people deceased only fall to the soil
To its country it will not come back, therefore he is died in Vietnam.
Stop! With Rolling Stones, stop! with Beatles songs
In the chest a heart does not have, but two medals yes.
